Recycled Energy Development chairman honored for achievements in industrial energy efficiency

CHICAGO, IL — Recycled Energy Development today announced that chairman Tom Casten has received the 2010 leadership award from the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance. The award is part of MEEA’s 6th annual Inspiring Efficiency Awards, which recognizes Midwest leaders who have made groundbreaking advancements in the field.

Casten is the nation’s leading figure on industrial energy recycling, a process that holds enormous potential for strengthening the economy while mitigating climate change. As the founder and president of several successful companies over the past three decades, Casten has deployed more than $2 billion to complete about 250 energy recycling projects. In the process, he has generated more than 11,000 mw of clean power, avoiding five million tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year. RED, his current company, has partnered with Denham Capital Management to create a $1.5 billion portfolio to fund energy recycling projects.

Casten served on President Obama’s energy advisory team during the 2008 campaign and has been instrumental in writing and advancing the industrial energy efficiency provisions that have appeared in several pieces of federal legislation in recent years.

“For over a century, the U.S. has been grossly inefficient in the way it makes power,” Casten says. But we have the tools to do more with less, serving both the economy and the environment.”

Studies suggest energy recycling could provide 40 percent of the U.S. electricity supply and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent — the equivalent of removing every passenger vehicle from the road. Meanwhile, energy costs would fall due to increased efficiency.

Casten and other award winners were honored at a gala on Thursday, January 14, 2010, during MEEA’s Midwest Energy Solutions Conference (www.meeaconference.org) at InterContinental Chicago, the first ENERGY STARĀ® certified hotel in Chicago. Casten earned his leadership award in the Commercial and Industrial Sector category. Other award recipients were honored in the areas of education, impact, innovation, and marketing.
